Wow, this is the third Rare Political 19th Century Paper Lantern Balloon we have been consigned all from the same source. We have asked and they said, That's It. After searching the internet, we learned it was made by Sprague & French in Ohio, and they made Political Campaign Lanterns and other ephemera for different elections. The Balloon Lantern in this auction is for the 1888 Candidates Harrison and Morton. Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901), the Republican presidential candidate in 1888 and 1892, was the grandson of William Henry Harrison, the ninth United States President. Republicans capitalized on this political lineage. Slogans like Tippecanoe and symbols of log cabins where popular during his grandfather's 1840 race which often adorned Benjamin's campaign materials. In 1888 Benjamin Harrison ran with Levi Morton (1824-1920) and became the Twenty Third President after he beat Grover Cleveland. ...... This approximately 18" diameter paper balloon is made of alternation red, white, and blue paper panels. The home we found this lantern in was once owned by the original owner, who attended an 1888 Campaign rally and brought this home with him. It has been folded and properly stored all these years. The colors are bright, and the condition is wonderful with only one small tear to the red-section that depicts an Eagle. We tried our best to carefully expand this lantern for photographs.
